Powder Explosives

Powder explosives for
qualified programmes

Powder explosives are solid energetic materials in granular, crystalline or fibrous form that release gas, heat and pressure through a rapid self-sustaining chemical reaction. The category includes high explosives that detonate and propellant materials that normally deflagrate:
available exclusively through controlled, licensed supply channels.

Two reaction regimes

The operational distinction between high and low explosives is based on reaction behaviour. Product classification, performance and authorised use remain specific to the approved material, formulation and current manufacturer documentation.

01

High explosives

High explosives undergo a supersonic detonation wave and produce strong brisance. HMX, RDX and TNT are established materials in qualified military, industrial and specialist energetic configurations.

02

Low-explosive propellants

Low explosives normally react by subsonic deflagration, generating expanding gases for controlled propulsion rather than a shattering effect. Nitrocellulose is a principal base material for modern smokeless propellants.

Materials in scope

These representative compounds form the basis of many modern military, industrial and propellant systems. Final suitability depends on the approved grade, formulation and programme specification.

Explosives safety and regulatory control

Powder explosives and energetic propellant materials are hazardous regulated substances. Supply, possession, transport, storage, handling and use require applicable licences, authorised facilities, approved procedures, qualified personnel and compliance with current manufacturer documentation and competent-authority requirements. Published values are indicative and subject to final contractual and lot-specific verification.
